Vosloorus Project

Sport is a great uniform of life - it takes us out of our everyday existence, brings us all together on a "level playing field" and shows us the opportunities we can mould for ourselves through application.

By focusing our attention on less advantaged communities, the IC’s Philanthropy Programme hopes to give those children an alternative focus to the streets and their inherent dangers of drugs, crime and negative peer pressure. Through tennis, and the dedication and structure it provides, we hope the children in our projects will learn basics such as commitment, self-esteem, respect for fellow players, physical fitness, the benefit of nutrition and how to play by the rules of fairness - all wrapped-up in an overall feeling of fun and enjoyment.

The IC’s first charitable development programme was co-organized in Burundi by the IC of Luxembourg in 2009 with Sport Sans Frontières and the ITF.  The IC Philanthropy committee is currently supporting 10 socially uplifting programmes.   Each programme is administered by one of the IC member countries.  Please click here to find out more.

Our activities are in line with the modern IC’s Mission Statement which includes: “promoting the growth of tennis by, among other things, encouraging participation of the young and the less advantaged”. Our projects in Vosloorus (near Johannesburg) and Kenton-on-Sea (near Port Elizabeth) provide the IC SA with perfect opportunities to put something back into the game which has given us so much.

Involvement in a programme such as this allows them to make new friends, learn how to follow rules, achieve personal goals, improve their self-esteem and stay off the streets.

We hope that for some this opportunity could be life-changing!

Thando Xolo Is Our Star Player

Thando Xolo Is Our Star Player

We entered seven of the players into the Gauteng East Closed tournament which also acts as the first leg of trials for the 2023 inter provincial teams.

We applaud the results of Thando Xolo who finished as runner up in both the under 14 singles and doubles with her partner, Angel Nkosi. Thando has always shown promise of better things to come, and this is a just reward for her total dedication to the training and coaching not only throughout this year, but over the time she has been involved with the programme. This is by far her best tournament result, eclipsing her 4th place finish in the same tournament last year, and it should ensure her inclusion into the inter provincial team for next year.

We also congratulate Siya Silinga who played in an age group higher than she normally would have done. Her development has been quite remarkable for one so slight of build, but her enthusiasm and commitment know no bounds. Siya played in the under 11 and finished fourth which is an incredible achievement for someone playing out of her comfort zone, but the results justified our faith in her that she could cope in the higher age group. She has an abundant of promise and with the right coaching and mentorship, Siya can write a new chapter in the Vosloorus tennis programme.

The other players, some playing in a higher age group for the first time, had some mixed success but I will be honest and say that I was hoping for better results from some of them. The experience that they had will show them just how far they must progress to be competitive at tournament level.

All in all, the success of both Thando and Siya outweighed the other results and once again the players from Vosloorus left their mark on the event.
