Squad Training with Gauteng East

Squad Training with Gauteng East

After looking at ways to give the better players more extensive and better qualified coaching, we met with Gauteng East Tennis Association  to discuss ways that this could benefit both our players and the province.

After lengthy discussion, it was agreed that we would send up to five of our top players to their training on a Saturday morning to be coached and trained by the provincial coaches. The benefit that will arise from this move is threefold;

  1. The quality of tennis should improve at Vosloorus Tennis Club as those coached will be better players when playing social at the club.
  2. It will give Gauteng East Tennis Association more players of colour in their squads and hopefully those training will earn the right to play for the province through ability alone and not under the current requirement of Tennis SA whereby a certain number of players chosen for any team must contain a percentage of previously disadvantage players.
  3. It will also be a small step in helping improve the quality of tennis within the country.

The five will attend practice each Saturday during term time which is approximately 12 weeks and the benefits will be seen in time. So far, the five have integrated well and more than held their own with more experienced players who have had the benefit of this type of coaching for a while now.

It is another step forward in the development of the players from the township with the carrot that of we see other township players improving within the current structure at Vosloorus, they too could join this advanced form of coaching and training.

Let us hope this will benefit those who go there and the club and province as a whole. Exciting times for the kids in the township.
