MIKE DUNK RE ELECTED AS CHAIRMAN OF SOUTH AFRICA IC.

The Annual General Meeting and dinner of the SA IC was held in Bloemfontein on Saturday 7 March and forty four people attended. It is held in Bloemfontein to coincide with the SA National Veterans Championships as it is during that tournament that the most number of IC members are in the same place at the same time. As the numbers of entries for the tournament were down on last year, it was understandable that there were slightly less attending our function this year.

Mike Dunk was re-elected as chairman and this will be his third term of office. In his report covering 2019, he highlighted the achievements of the club over the past twelve months which included;

  • SA IC won the CQS cup in Prague and then went onto play Hungary in Budapest.
  • SA IC won the African qualifying leg of the Rod Laver Junior challenge and will represent Africa in California in November.
  • Two highly successful social days were held in Johannesburg and Cape Town which brought together many of our members for a mornings tennis and lunch.
  • The development program at Vosloorus saw 34 children play in local tournaments with 24 experiencing tournament play for the first time.
  • Two players were chosen to represent Gauteng East at the SA schools tournament.
  • We produced four newsletters during the year
  • The finances improved with a profit of just over R42000 being made.
  • The platform has been laid for closer working relationship between IC and the governing body for tennis here, Tennis SA who assisted us financially for the junior challenge and a TSA Development team was invited for the first time.

Lorna Krog was re-elected as President in view of the sterling work she has done for the club in Cape Town and it also ensures continuity especially with our own IC Legends tournament scheduled for May at Sun City. Lorna is Tournament Director for that event.

Gavin Crookes, President of Tennis SA was our guest and he outlined some of the highlights of the year for tennis in South Africa and emphasized the return of ITF womens tournaments which were named after the former South African player Ilana Kloss.

In his closing statement Mike said he looked forward to another year of progress within the club; highlighted the forthcoming Legends event during which SA IC will honor South African legends from years gone by and undertook to foster the relationship with TSA as well as other bodies so as to aid and assist in our various projects.
