The Western Cape IC Team Tennis Day Report

The Western Cape IC Team Tennis Day Report

This was the 3rd attempt at getting the Western Cape members together. The previous two were to have a social drink after play at both the Western Province Seniors tournaments. Both had to be cancelled due to lack of enthusiasm from the members.  If there was an excuse why they could not stay for a drink “they used it”.  Very depressing for the team trying to put it together.  The December date, of course, also playing its part.

However, we did not let this get to us and started planning a tennis day.  We had a few meetings on when and where this should happen.  After several dates and venues we decided on Sunday 2 December 2018.  Yvonne then started checking out Kelvin Grove and Western Province Tennis Club.  It was all very frustrating for her trying to get through to the people involved.  We were then quoted really high prices which we would not have been able to deal with.

Yvonne and I together then paid a visit to the Green Point Tennis Club and met with Noel Retief who gave us a much better deal.  So we went ahead with the organising and “Oh my goodness it was like pulling teeth”.  I was hoping to have 32 players prepared to come out and play and sent out an email to every last member of the IC, including Jeff and Raven, who were very keen, but Jeff had a wedding in Springbok and Raven is working at the Futures tournaments in Stellenbosch.  The up side I think will be that all players had such a good morning of tennis, chatting and laughter, that we will have a better response next time.

Teams:

The IC Roses:

Japie Klaasen; Roy Stephenson; Shirley Engers and Barbara Rose-Innes.

 The IC Proteas:

Archie Rudman; Michael Wolffe; Arlene Gelbart and Vanessa September.

 The IC Bluebells:

Clinton Richards; Wynand Wessels; Nannie de Villiers and Shirley Larsen.

The IC Sunflowers:

Bertie Conradie; Des Agliotti; Jenny Cerff and Carol Fallows.

Format:

  • 4 teams playing a round robin.
  • A scoring system of “first to 7 and at 6 all a 7-point tiebreak.
  • Each tie consisted of 1 x MD, 1 x WD and 2 x  MxD
  • The No Ad rule
  • The change of ends tiebreak.

Prize-giving:

We had to buy 8 bottles of wine – 4 red and 4 white.  These were presented to the winning team – each got 1 red and 1 white.

The 2nd team got a shoe bag and a sleeve of new Wilson balls.

The 3rd and 4thteams each received a shoe bag and a sleeve of second hand Wilson balls – this to go out and practise for the next event.  It was all good and everyone had a good laugh.

Snack time:

Yvonne lit a fire, got it going and Clinton Richards did the honours of braaing the boerewors with Archie keeping him company, sipping a beer.  All players and the few spouses each had a boerie roll. There was a cash bar available which, of course, was used to the full.  This they all enjoyed and left the venue a “happy bunch”.  What more could we have asked for.

A great response from players –

Thanks to you and Yvonne for putting together a most enjoyable day. I look forward to our next meeting next year.

Mike Wolffe

I really enjoyed the morning, despite the discomfort from the shingles I developed just last week.... It’s so very sore. I was desperate for medication when 12 o clock arrived. So I slipped away as soon as our games were over and didn't stay for the celebrations and lunch.

Vanessa

It was good to see all the familiar faces again and nice meeting.
