SOUTH AFRICA WIN CQS CUP IN PRAGUE

The drought is finally broken. After a gap of some thirteen years South Africa won an IC trophy with victory in Prague.

The CQS cup was played between four nations with us edging out hosts Czech Republic with Ireland third and United States fourth. Playing on clay was a unique experience for most of our players and with only two days practice beforehand, it was quick learning curve. When you consider that the other nations have far more experience playing on clay, then the victory was even sweeter.

The first day we played against Ireland and then using a novel and it must be said interesting format, we “mixed and matched” playing with players from the other countries.

With exceptionally strong performances from our ladies backed up with some good results from the men, against all odds we edged out the hosts much to our delight and surprise.

The team was Danie Botha, Jean Hubert, Miles Foxcroft, Mike Dunk, Debbie den Hartog, Sonja Botha, Barbara Rose-Innes, Lyn Lyndon and Tamzon du Plessis. We had strong support from out two travelling supporters, Carol Hubert and Alto Botha.

Our congratulations go to Jiri Medonos and Helena Sukova on putting on such a wonderful tournament played in very hot conditions but in a most magnificent stadium. The official dinner was a once in a life time experience with a boat trip on the river.

The whole tournament and the most beautiful city of Prague will live long in our memories.
